[Update] Companies Urged to Comply With Sunset Date for Cr6+

The sunset date for Chromium VI (hexavalent chromium) compounds is today, September 21, 2017, meaning users of the substance should be ready to adjust their supply chains accordingly to ensure compliance with this deadline.

After today, use of the substance is prohibited unless specific permission has been granted through an authorisation. The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) have announced that downstream users of Chromium VI compounds may continue to use the substance if an authorisation request was made by a company further up their supply chain before the latest application date, which was March 21, 2016.

Chromium VI is often used in surface treatments, hard chrome plating, conversion coating, passivation and cooling systems. These uses take place in various sectors including the chemical, metal and mechanical industries, and within armament, aerospace, automotive, electronics and lithography operations.

If your company is using Chromium VI compounds, you will need to consider the following:

  1. Check and understand the use of the substance within your operations
  2. Check if your company has made an authorisation request for any uses of the substance
  3. Check if upstream suppliers have made such requests on behalf of the downstream supply chain
